Description: On October 8, 2005, parts of the Northern reaches of Pakistan were struck by the earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale. The immediate challenges were a reconstruction of approximately 13,000 projects. During the reconstruction phase of rural housing in the affected districts, Limited Environmental Assessment (LEA) was carried out to identify the aspects, measures for impacts minimization, halt further environmental degradation, and recommend mitigation measures. The LEA was driven by the Environmental Safeguards of the World Bank from the basic components of ESSAF as part of ERC, the Environmental Strategy of ERRA and to some extent requirements of Pakistan Environmental Protection Act (PEPA), 1997.
